According to coders Dan Malone and Mike Montgomery, the CHAOS ENGINE graphics were created for 32 colours and then reduced to 16 colours for the Atari ST version [Source: Personal communication from the coders, October 2012].
The Chaos Engine is the first game that has been the lead development version on Amiga. All the previous Bitmap Brothers games were done on Atari ST as lead machine.
