Pioneer of the text-based adventure genre, Will Crowther originally conceived and wrote the first text-based adventure game. ADVENTURE (aka ADVENT, COLOSSAL CAVE ADVENTURE), as it came to be known, was coded for mainframe computers in 1975/76 on a DEC PDP-10 in Fortran.
Earlier that decade Crowther served as an integral part of the internet pioneering ARPAnet development team, which was named after the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). His implementation of a distributed distance vector routing system in the early 1970s for the ARPAnet development team was considered an important step in the evolution of the modern day Internet.
