Established in Waterford, Ireland in 1988 by ex-teacher & Martech boss David Martin and then-EMI music industry worker Mike Dixon. Emerald quickly established themselves as a talented development company with its first release PHANTOM FIGHTER. Consequently, publishers began commissioning Emerald to work on arcade conversions (e.g. VIGILANTE) and games based on movie licenses (e.g. MOONWALKER).
By 1991, the commission work had taken its toll, however, and most of Emerald's young coders were either approaching burn-out or had already departed. Shortly before their demise, the Emerald coders were asked to dauntingly churn out a number of titles in 4 weeks to save the company. Unsurprisingly, the work produced was below par and prompted founders Martin and Dixon to unceremoniously close the company's doors forthwith.
