Notes

[1] Licensed game based on Tom Clancy's 1984 best-selling novel (and not the film), "The Hunt for Red October". A bonus copy of the novel was included with the U.S. release of the game by Software Toolworks/Datasoft (see HERE).

[2] The U.S. releases of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER by Datasoft and Software Toolworks/Datasoft were licensed from Grandslam (UK). The first U.S. release by Datasoft came in early 1988, some months after the UK release in 1987.

[3] The U.S. version of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER contains some minor enhancements over the UK version, including music and the ability to select the difficulty level (easy/normal/difficult) for gameplay.

[4] Original release contents included a giant A2 game poster and a game Crew Badge (except last UK release by Grandslam and last U.S. release by Datasoft), as well as a Ship Recognition Chart.

[5] Game autoboots from floppy or, alternatively, may be launched from WB (UK releases only).

[6] Game supports full multitasking (memory permitting), savegames and a quit back to WB option.

[7] Distributed in Australia by Ozi Soft.

Known releases:
- Release 1.x (30-Oct-87) [UK]
- Release 1.x (11-Jan-88) [U.S. (Datasoft)]
- Release 1.8 (20-Apr-88) [U.S. (Software Toolworks/Datasoft)]

TRIVIA:
THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER was Argus Press Software's one-and-only 16-bit game release prior to declaring bankrupty in 1987, but not before transferring software copyrights/licenses and company assets elsewhere ahead of time. In late 1987, ex-Argus Managing Director Stephen Hall formed Grandslam Entertainment out of the ashes of Argus and publication of THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER was resumed by the new software house.

Conversion Notes

Simultaneous Amiga, Atari ST and PC/Tandy versions were initially released by Argus Press.
PC versions: CGA, EGA, Tandy, Amstrad PC

N.B. Unrelated to the NES/SNES/Game Boy game of the same name.
