publisher information
Publisher name Kixx XL (U.S. Gold)
Birth year 1992
Mother country United Kingdom
Notes Launched in November 1992, Kixx XL was U.S. Gold's high-end budget re-release label (£12.99 - £16.99 per game) for the Amiga, PC/Tandy and Atari ST platforms.

The label was designed to offer top quality products at affordable prices and catered for more serious gamers, with the range including flight simulators, role-playing games, graphic adventures, sports simulators and exclusive compilations from a host of highly-acclaimed software houses [e.g. Delphine, LucasArts, Sierra, Dynamix, SSI, Access and MicroProse - see HERE for a more complete list].

Games offered on the Kixx XL label originally retailed at much higher prices when first released. The higher-than-usual budget price tag was compensated for by redesigned flashier packaging, as well as bigger boxes that allowed larger games on several disks to be released and heftier manuals to be included.

Indeed, the Kixx XL label was true to its original design and permitted more serious games to be released without compromising quality. Notably, intros, titlescreens, music etc. weren't removed to reduce the disk count of larger games like MONKEY ISLAND 2, and comprehensive manuals were included instead of budget small box-friendly instruction sheets as per the cheaper games released on the sister Kixx budget label.
